Creative Media for Health Education

ABSTRACT

If you walk in the streets today, you are bound to bump into people who have, one time or another, faced a certain health issue such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and many more. The saddest of part is not only having and experiencing this life altering and threatening diseases, but actually not realising that you even have it and not knowing what to do about it. Once affected by these diseases would only people start to question themselves and think about what can be done or what should have been done. With that in mind, in 2017, the Faculty of Creative Multimediaa (FCM) of Multimedia University (MMU), the IMU Cares of International Medical University (IMU) and also with the support of the Health Unit of United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR) came together for a project on “Health Education For All” (HEFA). The aim of this project was to create media contents related to health education via service learning framework. The collaboration involved several subject matter experts as well as students. Participants of the project came up with health related media content by using different media format such as brochures, posters, animations and interactive applications. Academics came on board by introducing assessments and coursework that not only function as the students’ learning platform but also serve as tools to further promote and increase the level of awareness of the importance quality health. Students’ involvement in related projects for this noble effort not only provided them with the knowledge and skills to come up with creative media content, but also to open their minds and hearts on the importance of the issue at hand. The controlling steps for communicable disease and the preventive measures of non-communicable disease have to be well thought, be easily communicated and understood by all. Thus, it is imperative for creative health media to play a more active role in disseminating accurate and reliable information to the disadvantaged or urban poor communities.
